Gaukurinn is a bar and live venue at Blöndalshús on Tryggvagata in downtown Reykjavík. Gaukur á Stöng opened it’s doors on the 19th of November 1983.

In May 1988, the Althing passed legislation legalising beer. The first legal draft beer was sold at “Gaukur á Stöng” which is now Gaukurinn.

Since then Gaukurinn has been a stable in the Icelandic music scene, where many of Iceland’s biggest artists started out. In more recent years Gaukurinn has established it self as a safe haven for the queer/alternative/drag and other artists in Iceland.

Our Values

Queer

We are all a part of the rainbow. Everyone is welcome regardless of how they identify. We are proud to have unisex bathrooms. We are a queer space and you can feel free to express who you are.

Live venue

First and foremost we are a live venue and we want to help artists of all calibers to express themselves. Gaukurinn was built as a place for new talent to emerge

Alternative

Pop, Rock, Metal. We welcome you all.

Friendly

At Gaukurinn everyone is a friend. We hold a strict no bullshit policy, be kind rewind.

History

We sold the first legal draft beer in Iceland. Many of the biggest Icelandic artists had their first gigs at Gaukurinn. This is something we are very proud of and want to keep going. Innovation never stops.
